I am interested in the phenomenology of being on trains and how this can be distributed across the senses in an art piece. I want to recreate the experience of relativity that you feel on a train within a gallery setting. I have the travel bug: I travel a lot on trains and buses and find myself gazing out the window looking at a blur of the external environment and thinking and questioning my future decisions, doting on my favourite memories, bopping my head to . When I returned from my travels this summer, I became inspired to recreate the contemplative state I was in for the audience.
I started by taking some videos of the moving landscapes my placing my camera in a set position on the window of the train. I took screenshots from these videos and edited them, increasing the contrast, lowering the exposure and increasing the saturation. I wanted to create the elusion of a layer of captured movement between the window and the fixed image of the landscape. I noticed that this produced a series of horizontal lines of light. I would like to collect these screen shots and reanimate the video, adjusting the speed of the frames and adding in extra rhythms to the video itself to amplify the dreaminess of being on a train.
